I love the Merrick Before Grain products. My cats love them and they have had no digestive problems since I switched. I regularly purchase the adult "Merrick Before Grain #1 Chicken Dry Cat Food" through Amazon Subscribe and Save.

I purchased the kitten food for our new kitten and the cats seemed to like this just as well. In fact the adult cats seemed to like the kitten version while the kitten seemed to prefer the adult cat food. That being the case, they all get fed the adult food now.

Merrick Before Grain Cat foods are wonderful. It seems that 99.9 percent of cat foods on the market contain grains – sometimes in spite of the fact that they claim to be grain free. This line of cat food is the only one that I found to truly contain no grains. And it is one of the better priced high quality cat foods that I could find! I found that my cats have been much more healthy since I switched to feeding Merrick Before Grains.

I would add just one note… I cannot afford higher quality canned cat food, and the lower priced canned food are a completely unhealthy choice. Thus I no longer feed them canned food, and Merrick seems to meet all of their nutritional needs. I do however occasionally add approximately 1 tablespoon of flax seed oil to the food to make up for the oils missed. Their coats are shiny and healthy and they are far more active than they were before the switch!

I've been buying this for our two kittens, since they were 3 months old, I will keep buying it until they are 1 yr old, where I will switch to Merrick adult food. I don't mind the smell, I don't know what it tastes like, but the kittens love it, and our two older boys try to eat it all the time. Little sad that it's $25 for only 7lbs of food, I wish the bags came in bigger sizes, cause our two kittens go through a bag a month. I checked a lot of different brands and reviews and prices, I like this best and have convinced my roommate to switch her older cats to Merrick, once the kittens reach adult stage. i like how the bag has a velcro strip to reseal itself after you fill their bowls. I free-feed the kittens, when and if they get fat I'll put em on a diet, but since they are a healthy weight now, they can eat as they please.

I suddenly found myself with a feral kitten that we had to bottle feed then transition to solid food. This was the first kibble food I bought her. The company is fairly local to me and we can get it local, but I prefer to order on Amazon and do autoship.

I've raised my ragdoll adult cat on grain-free food, and she's so healthy and her coat so beautiful. I just started with grain free for my little Talullah.

The kitten cries when her bowl is empty to let us know we need to serve her highness. Everyone tries to steal her food, because it smells and tastes great, so I have to feed Talullah in another place. She doesn't gorge on this food like ferals often do in the beginning.

I just wish Kitten food was a little less expensive.

Her coat is luxurious and soft and she's growing so fast. This food agrees with her so well. Isn't she absolutely perfect?

Signed….a proud kitten mom.

A Decade of Kibble Scrutiny: Is Merrick’s Kitten Formula Worth the Hype?

After a decade of scrutinizing pet food labels and observing countless feline reactions, I’ve learned that a successful kitten food must do more than just fill a bowl. It must support explosive growth, entice picky palates, and lay the foundation for lifelong health. Merrick’s Purrfect Bistro Grain-Free Chicken recipe for young cats enters a crowded market with a premium price tag of nearly $30 for a 7-pound bag, backed by a substantial volume of over 800 customer reviews. The central question isn’t just about quality—which Merrick is generally known for—but whether this specific formulation delivers targeted value for growing kittens.

Digging into the data, the product’s positioning is clear: a grain-free, high-protein formula with deboned chicken as the first ingredient. This aligns with current nutritional trends favoring animal-based protein for obligate carnivores. The “Before Grain” lineage mentioned in a featured review is a telling detail; it indicates a long-standing recipe that has fostered brand loyalty, with customers reporting smooth digestion and eager consumption from bottle-fed ferals to pampered house cats. The consistency of positive feedback across 803 reviews, specifically noting seamless transitions and a lack of digestive upset, is a powerful data point. For kittens with sensitive systems, this reported reliability is often worth the premium over mass-market options.

From a practical standpoint, this food is best suited for guardians committed to a grain-free diet for their young cat. The pellet form is typical for dry food, but the small kibble size is appropriately tailored for smaller mouths and teeth. My advice is to use the positive transition stories as a guide: introduce it slowly mixed with the previous food, even if your kitten seems immediately interested. The high protein and fat content essential for energy and development can be rich, and a gradual shift over 7-10 days allows the gut microbiome to adjust. Given the cost, consider buying a small bag first for a taste test, even if the per-pound price is better on the larger size. There’s no savings if your kitten turns up its nose.

However, a professional analysis must look beyond the glowing testimonials. The grain-free classification itself is an important consideration. While many cats thrive on such diets, some veterinarians caution against legume-rich grain-free formulas due to potential links to dietary dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). It’s prudent to examine the ingredient list for high concentrations of peas, lentils, or potatoes. Furthermore, “for young cats” is a broad age range. This food is excellent for growth phases, but you should have a plan for transitioning to an adult maintenance formula around 12 months of age to avoid unnecessary calories. The price point, while competitive within the premium niche, is a significant jump from grocery store brands, so budget-conscious buyers need to evaluate the long-term investment against the demonstrated benefits for their individual pet.

In conclusion, Merrick’s Purrfect Bistro for young cats presents a compelling case built on a proven recipe, high-quality first ingredients, and a wealth of positive user experiences highlighting palatability and digestive comfort. It shines as a strong option for those prioritizing a grain-free, protein-forward diet from weaning through adolescence. The investment seems justified for kittens benefiting from its specific formulation, though it warrants a discussion with your veterinarian about dietary philosophy and a careful review of the full ingredient panel to ensure it aligns with your kitten’s unique nutritional journey.

Nurturing Your Kitten’s Bright Beginning

Welcome to the rewarding journey of raising a healthy, energetic kitten! To help your little one thrive on Merrick Purrfect Bistro, a gradual transition is key. If you’re switching from another food, mix increasing amounts of this new kibble with the old over 7-10 days to avoid tummy upset.

Since real deboned chicken is the star, this high-protein formula supports their rapid growth. Ensure fresh water is always available alongside the dry food to aid digestion and overall wellness. For portion guidance, please refer to the feeding chart on the package, adjusting as your unique kitten grows—their appetite will be your best indicator.

You can feel confident knowing each bite delivers a holistic blend of DHA for brain development, Omega fatty acids for a silky coat, and essential antioxidants. Store the bag in a cool, dry place to preserve its natural goodness. Here’s to building a foundation of health and happiness, one wholesome kibble at a time!

Your Kitten’s Nutrition, Answered

Why is this formula specifically good for my growing kitten?

Merrick Purrfect Bistro Kitten Recipe is crafted to meet the intense nutritional demands of growth. It features real deboned chicken as the first ingredient for high-quality protein to support developing muscles. It’s also enriched with DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid found in mother’s milk, which aids in healthy brain and vision development. The balanced calcium and phosphorus levels promote strong bones and teeth, making it a complete diet for your kitten’s first year.

My cat has a sensitive stomach. Are the ingredients easy to digest?

Yes, this formula is designed with digestibility in mind. Being grain-free, it avoids common fillers like corn, wheat, or soy that some cats struggle to process. The primary carbohydrate sources are sweet potatoes and peas, which are gentler and more digestible. The inclusion of probiotics supports a healthy gut flora, and the natural fiber from ingredients like alfalfa meal helps promote healthy digestion and stool quality.

How does this food support my kitten’s immune system?

This recipe includes a powerful blend of antioxidants from fruits, vegetables, and added vitamins. Key nutrients like Vitamin E and Vitamin C work to neutralize free radicals and support a robust immune response. A strong immune system is crucial for kittens as they explore their new world, helping them stay healthy and resilient during their important developmental stages.

When should I transition my kitten to adult cat food?

We generally recommend feeding this kitten formula until your cat reaches about 12 months of age. Most cats are considered adults at one year. The transition to an adult maintenance formula should be gradual over 7-10 days, slowly mixing in increasing amounts of the new food with the kitten food to avoid digestive upset. Always consult your veterinarian for personalized advice based on your cat’s breed, size, and health.

Is this food suitable for all life stages, including adult cats?

While this recipe is formulated to meet the specific, higher nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for growth (kittens), it is also certified for all life stages. This means it is nutritionally complete and balanced for adult cats as well. However, adult cats with lower activity levels may require less food than a growing kitten, so careful portion control is important to maintain a healthy weight.
